Preloaded Memories

Give your AI characters rich backstories and past experiences that shape their conversations.

What are Preloaded Memories?

Preloaded Memories allow character creators to add backstory, past experiences, and important context to their AI characters. These memories become part of the character's knowledge, making conversations more immersive and consistent.

Subscription Feature

Preloaded Memories are activated for eligible users (Plus and Premium subscribers) during roleplay. Character creators on any plan can add memories to their characters, but these memories will only be used when eligible users chat with the character.

Eligible users: Plus and Premium subscribers

Bio vs. Memories: Understanding the Difference

Character Bio

The character bio is the core definition of your character that appears in every conversation. It includes:

  • Physical appearance (hair color, clothing style, etc.)
  • Personality traits and behavior patterns
  • Current situation and role
  • Core backstory elements essential to the character
  • Skills and abilities

The bio is always included in the AI's prompt and should contain everything needed for the character to function properly.

Preloaded Memories

Memories are additional historical context that enriches the character but isn't essential for basic functionality:

  • Specific past events and experiences
  • Detailed relationship histories
  • Childhood memories and formative moments
  • Past adventures or significant life events
  • Historical knowledge unique to the character

Important

Your character must be fully functional with just the bio! Memories enhance the experience but should never contain information critical to basic character function. Think of memories as bonus content that makes conversations richer, not required reading.

Why Use Preloaded Memories?

🎭 Consistent Character Backstory

Your character has a defined past that stays consistent. When they reference their history, it won't contradict itself - the character's past experiences remain the same, giving them a coherent personal history.

💭 Enhanced Roleplay Depth

Characters naturally reference past events, relationships, and experiences during conversation, creating more believable and engaging interactions.

🎨 Creator Control

Define exactly who your character is through their past experiences. Shape their personality, motivations, and behavior patterns through carefully crafted memories.

🌟 Richer Conversations

Characters draw upon their memories when relevant topics arise, making responses feel more natural and personalized to their unique history.

How Preloaded Memories Work

When an eligible user starts chatting with a character that has preloaded memories:

  1. Automatic Integration - The character's memories are automatically integrated into the conversation context
  2. Natural References - The AI naturally brings up relevant memories during appropriate moments in the conversation
  3. Consistent Experience - Every eligible user gets the same backstory elements, ensuring narrative consistency
  4. Smart Relevance - Memories are intelligently selected based on conversation context, not dumped all at once

Creating Memories for Your Character

During Character Creation

When creating a new character, you can add memories to establish their backstory:

  1. Start creating your character as usual
  2. Look for the "Add Memories" or "Character Backstory" section
  3. Add individual memory entries (up to 1500 characters each)
  4. Arrange memories in the order you want them to be considered
  5. Complete character creation - memories are automatically saved

For Existing Characters

You can also add or edit memories for characters you've already created:

  1. Go to your character's edit page
  2. Navigate to the "Memories" or "Backstory" section
  3. Add, edit, or remove memory entries
  4. Save your changes

Memory Guidelines

What Makes a Good Memory?

✅ DO Include:

  • Specific past events that shaped the character
  • Important relationships and how they developed
  • Defining moments or turning points in their life
  • Cultural background and upbringing details
  • Skills learned and how they acquired them
  • Emotional experiences that influence their behavior

❌ DON'T Include:

  • Current status or present-tense information (use the character description instead)
  • Generic statements that don't add depth
  • Contradictory information
  • Excessive violence or inappropriate content

Memory Examples

Good Memory Example:

"At age 15, I discovered an abandoned library in the old district. Spent three years reading every book there, which sparked my love for ancient history and dead languages. The librarian's ghost, Marcus, became my first real friend."

Another Good Example:

"Lost my voice for six months after a failed spell in my second year at the Academy. Learned to communicate through illusions and light magic during that time. Now I appreciate the power of silence and visual storytelling."

Tips for Effective Memory Creation

1. Be Specific

Instead of "had a difficult childhood," write "grew up in the mountain village of Thornwick, where harsh winters meant learning to hunt and preserve food from age seven."

2. Create Connections

Link memories together to build a coherent narrative. If one memory mentions learning magic, another could detail a specific spell that went wrong.

3. Add Emotional Weight

Include how events made the character feel and how they changed them. This helps the AI understand the character's emotional responses.

4. Consider Conversation Hooks

Create memories that naturally come up in various conversations. A memory about cooking with grandmother provides opportunities to discuss food, family, and tradition.

5. Order Matters

Memories are displayed with the most recent at the top and older memories below. When adding memories, place recent events at the top of the list and earlier life experiences toward the bottom. This chronological ordering helps the AI understand the timeline of the character's life.

Limitations

  • Maximum of 15 memories per character
  • Each memory can be up to 1500 characters long
  • Memories are activated only for eligible users
  • Once added to a conversation, memories cannot be modified mid-chat
  • The AI selects relevant memories based on context, not all memories are used in every conversation

For Eligible Users

When you chat with characters that have preloaded memories:

  • The character's backstory is automatically available
  • References to past events will be consistent and natural
  • You don't need to "teach" the character about their own history
  • The roleplay experience is immediately deeper and more immersive

TIP

Look for characters marked with a "Has Memories" or "Rich Backstory" tag to find characters with preloaded memories!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can free users see or use preloaded memories? A: Character creators on any plan can add memories to their characters. However, these memories are only activated during conversations with eligible users.

Q: How many memories can I add to a character? A: You can add up to 15 memories per character. Quality matters more than quantity - focus on meaningful, impactful memories rather than trying to fill all 15 slots.

Q: Will the AI mention all memories in every conversation? A: No, the AI intelligently selects relevant memories based on the conversation context. This keeps interactions natural rather than forcing backstory into every response.

Q: Can I edit memories after creating the character? A: Yes, you can always return to your character's settings to add, edit, or remove memories. However, these changes will only affect new conversations. Existing chats keep the memories they started with to maintain consistency - users won't suddenly experience different backstories mid-conversation.

Q: Do memories count against the character description limit? A: No, memories are stored separately and don't count against your character description character limit.
